First Deadly Sin
The First Deadly Sin From: Billd@Microserve.com (Billd)
Janet got out of bed shortly after Jack left for work. She had a lot to do and little time to do it in. Greg should be arriving at any time. She hopped in the shower, put on her makeup, styled her hair, and got dressed in record time. Ten minutes after she finished, the familiar code knock came on the door. He no sooner got inside the door than Janet was all over him. Within seconds they were in bed partaking of each other’s bodies. For nearly two hours they explored each other, until at last Janet informed him that she had to get going.
“What? You got something better than me lined up or something?”
“No,” she said casually. “But I do have things to do. I have to keep up appearances you know. I have to clean the place up some, and I have a hair appointment at 12:30.”
“A hair appointment? You’re not gonna go and do anything crazy are you?” He ran his fingers through her long brown hair, smelling deeply of its fragrance and revelling in it’s luxuriance.

“Crazy? Now you know better than that. I’d never do anything like that. You may love my hair, but I guarantee you, I love it more.”
“Good. So…….same time tomorrow?”
“You better be here at the same time tomorrow buddy.”
They kissed passionately, each briefly entertaining the idea of another quick roll in the hay, both deciding against it, and he left.
At 12:10 she left for the hair salon. At that exact moment, unknown to her, Jack was getting the news of her infidelity. But for all the world she had not a care. After a brief wait, she was taken back to the shampoo station by her regular stylist. She closed her eyes as the warm water engulfed her head, and slipped into her own private realm of reverie. Thoughts of her lover filled her mind. How they’d met. How they’d spent countless hours enjoying each others bodies. A brief twinge of guilt ran through her as she thought of her husband. Good ole Jack. So dependable. So consistent. So boring. She knew she loved him, but sex with him had become so mundane. He was of the old school. No experimentation, no curiosity, no fire. Greg was different. He seemed to want to taste her very essence each and every time they made love. She would never want to lose Jack over Greg. Never would she sacrifice the safety, the comfort, the security of a life with Jack, for the passion with Greg. So she was convinced that she didn’t have to. She would have both. Her reverie was interrupted by the stylist who was now wrapping a towel around her head, and helping her to the styling chair.
“So? The usual trim today Janet? Or are you gonna surprise me and tell me to do something new for you?”
“Nope not today I’m afraid. Just the usual trim.”
The cape was draped around her shoulders, and the comb set to its work detangling her long lush tresses. When it all hung smooth and heavy down her back, the stylist gently urged her head forward and down so as to bring the bottom edge of her hair up to the middle of her back so she could trim a nice even line a half inch shorter than its current length. Minutes passed as Janet waited for the stylist to begin trimming her hair, but nothing happened. She started to ask if there was a problem, while at the same time she raised her eyes to look at the stylist in the mirror. To her utter surprise she found instead that Jack was now standing behind her. In less than a second she was able to determine that he was not at all happy. His face was a study in madness. She could not imagine what he was doing there, and said in a small, scared voice, ” Jack? What’s wrong? What are you doing here?”
Jack’s face blanched. Fire seemed to shoot from his eyes. he quickly reached around to the counter in front of Janet and grabbed a pair of scissors that lay there. “We’re gonna have ourselves a little game of questions and answers.”
“What are the scissors for Jack?”
A sinister grin etched itself onto his lips. He lifted a long thick lock of her hair in the back and said, “I’ll ask the fuckin questions. Let’s begin, shall we?”
Janet had never seen this side of Jack before. He had always been so calm, so placid during the seven years of their relationship. She did not in fact believe that Jack even had a temper. She felt him lift the lock of her hair, and saw the maniacal look in his eyes, and fear of this man gripped her for the very first time.
“What are you doing Jack? Please talk to me! Whatever is bothering you, we can work it out.”
Jack let out a sinister barking laugh. “Work it out? Oh yeah, we’re gonna work it out all right. Now! What’s his name?”
“Whose name?” Janet knew instantly who he was referring to. Her mind reeled at the thought that Jack somehow knew about her ongoing affair. But she had little time to worry about it, for at that moment she heard the rasping crunch of the scissors as they sawed their way through the heavy lock of hair that Jack had been holding. Her eyes went wide with shock and horror as she saw the two foot clump of hair float in front of her, then fall from Jack’s hand into her lap.
“Let’s try this again. What’s his name?” Janet’s mind became a swirling eddy of confusion and indecision. ‘ How could he possibly know ‘ she thought. ‘He can’t possibly know. He’s grasping at straws. Trying to get me to admit to it because he’s not really sure. He suspects, but doesn’t know. I’ve got to stick to my guns.’ To Jack she said, “Honey, I don’t know what your talking about. Why don’t you just calm down, and we’ll talk about this? What is whose name?”
Jack lifted a second huge lock at the back of her head, “What do you think I am, STUPID?” The scissors began their crunching sound again, and the second lock of hair came free. Once again he let it drop into her lap. True panic settled over Janet at the sight of this second larger lock of hair now sitting in her lap. She knew that nearly the entire back of her head was devoid of hair at this point. “Greg!” she blurted out. “His name is Greg.” Tears began to roll down her cheeks. Her chest started to convulse with sobs of grief, not only for the loss of her hair, but for the loss of the love of a man whom she had once adored, and knew had once adored her.
“How long has this been going on?”
She couldn’t possibly admit the full depth of her deception to him. She had to at least try some damage control. ” Once! I only saw him once!” She felt him grab yet another large lock of her hair, and looking into the mirror could see nearly all of the hair on the left side of her head was in his fist, scissors poised to sever it from her head. “For god’s sakes Jack! I swear, it was only one time!” She lowered her eyes so as not to see the damage as the shears worked their way through her hair once again. There was a moment of silence, and when she looked back up, she saw her left ear was completely exposed, and she saw Jack still standing behind her tears streaming down his cheeks. “Why?!!! Why damn it? What the fuck did I do so wrong?” Janet began to cry in earnest at the sight of this loving caring man crying out of heart felt anguish over her infidelity. Through her tears she somehow managed to cough out the words, “I don’t know.”
Jack let out a guttural roar of pain and anger, and grabbed the hair on the right side of her head. There was no question this time. He simply set about chopping the sizeable ponytail from her head. Janet watched in horror as the last remnants of her once long hair fell away from her head. All that remained of her once glorious mane was a chopped up, middle of the ear mop of brown nothingness. She could hear Jack spitting words at her but could not comprehend what he was saying. She felt as though she were in a waking nightmare. He must have been asking another question because when she did not answer, he set about cutting the brown mop of nothingness even shorter. It no longer felt real. She felt completely detached. Her subconscious had convinced her that it was all a bad dream, and that she would be waking up any second now to find herself and Jack laying in bed, wrapped in each others arms. She was faintly aware of shards of hair floating past her eyes and thudding in her lap. Her eyes were fixed on the mirror where she watched as a woman she thought remotely resembled her, sat placidly, while lock after lock of her hair was savagely shorn from her head. She thought she could hear Jack screaming something about how sexy and pretty “Greg” would think she is now, while somewhere in the background the seemingly ethereal voice of the stylist begged Jack to stop what he was doing.
Time seemed to have stopped. No longer did she feel her hair being roughly tugged and hacked from her head. Gone was the sound of Jack’s voice shouting a mixture of pleadings and obscenities. Silence hung in the air like a specter. The nightmare changed. She now felt as though she were sitting in the middle of an immense beehive. Their humming filled her ears. Suddenly they attacked. She could feel them on her head, stinging her ferociously. The attack seemed cunningly ordered to her, for they were stinging her head in one inch wide swaths, which moved from the nape of her neck upwards to her crown, and then began anew at her nape moving inexorably around her entire head. They were no ordinary bees however, for wherever they stung, she would lose her hair. She could see it falling in tufts from her head, sliding mournfully to her lap then down to their final resting place on the floor. As though they sensed the demise of their victim, the bees redoubled their attack, making a final stinging surge over the top of her head. She sensed more than felt, the final few strands of her hair trickle down over her nose and cheeks, and as suddenly as they had appeared, the bees departed.
Janet felt herself being spun around. In her daze she thought the dream had not yet ended, and that she was now going to drown in a whirlpool. In truth it was the stylist turning her in the chair away from the mirror. She felt a hand on her shoulder shaking her, and heard a voice beckoning to her. “Janet? Janet? Are you all right? Janet answer me?!” Her eyes opened to see her stylist standing in front of her. The stylists face wore the pained expression of one who had recently been beaten by a heavy cudgel. “Are you all right?” she asked again.
“Huh? Oh, yeah. I’m fine. I must have dozed off or something. I had the weirdest dream.” The stylist just stared at her incredulously.
“God Janet, I’m so sorry! I couldn’t stop him. He was like a madman.”
Janet’s eyes went wide once more as the reality that it had not been a dream slammed down upon her with the force of a tornado. She spun around wildly, her hands flying to her head. ” OH MY GOD!! OH MY GOD!! OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH DEAR GOD!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” Her eyes darted from left to right, up and down, searching like a hunted rabbit for the wolf that sought to devour her. “Where is he?”
“He’s gone. He stood here yelling at you for awhile after he did that to you, but you didn’t answer. So he just left.”
“What the hell am I gonna do? He shaved my head god damn it!”
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t stop him!”
“What am I gonna do?”
“I don’t know. I have a wig that you can have. I feel terrible. I just couldn’t stop him, I was so afraid. I’ve never seen anyone look so murderous.”
Janet broke down in tears once again. The stylist let her sit there and cry while she went and got the wig that she had offered. Finally, after a solid fifteen minutes of sobbing, Janet recovered herself, put on the wig, thanked the stylist and left. She had no place to go except home.
The First Deadly Sin (Epilogue)
Jack hadn’t gone to the hair salon intent on doing what he had done to Janet. He had merely gone down there to confront her about her infidelity. He cared little for where she was, or who might be present. All he cared about was releasing some of the anger that threatened to tear his very soul asunder had it not been let out. But then when he saw her sitting there, the thought that she was having herself beautified for another man’s benefit caused a chain reaction of emotions in him that brought out a very darkest side of his personality. So it was that he shaved her head bald. Now he sat alone in his house. The silence hung in the air like a specter. Then suddenly, she came in.
No words were spoken between them. They stood facing each other for what seemed like an eternity, each searching the others eyes for a spark of recognition, trying desperately to see in each other what they had each seen before the events of the day had occurred. It was Janet who broke eye contact, lowering her eyes in shame and walking silently into the bedroom. She flung herself onto the bed and broke into a fit of sobbing, until eventually sleep took her. But even in slumber she knew no peace. Her dreams were filled with nightmarish images of Jack in the guise of the devil, shearing her hair, lock by lock from her head with a razor sharp pitchfork. Then the image changed and she was running through mud pursued by a giant clipper which bore Jack’s resemblance. She stumbled and Jack the giant clipper swooped down on her and in one feel swipe, sheared every single strand of hair from her head.
She woke up gasping for air and sweating profusely. The alarm clock silently announced that it was 10:30 am. She had somehow slept not only through the remainder of the day, but through the entire night as well. Jack had already left for work. She stumbled to the bathroom taking extra care to avoid her reflection in the mirror, and went through her normal morning routine, with the exception of her usual hair care regimen. As she entered the kitchen she saw a note on the table. It said simply;
You have until the end of the month to make other arrangements. Jack
Despair gripped her heart like a vice. She had lost the only man she had ever truly loved. Just when she thought things could be no worse, there came a knock on the door. So preoccupied was she with her sorrow, that she never thought about the arrangements she had made the previous day. So it was that she answered the door to find Greg standing there. His mouth fell open in shock when he saw her. “What the hell did you do? Are you crazy?” Before she could utter a single word, he turned and was gone. An hour later the phone rang. It was Greg calling to inform her that he didn’t think it was a good idea for them to see each other anymore. Now she had lost it all. Her husband, her lover, and her hair all gone.
At five pm. Jack came home from work. For a long while nothing was said between them. Finally, when she could stand the tension no longer, Janet spoke to him. “Please Jack, I don’t want to leave. I don’t want to lose you. I’ll do anything you say, just please don’t let us end this way.”
“Funny you should say that sweetheart, cause I’ve been giving it some thought today. You’ll do anything I say huh?”
“Yes Jack, I swear it. Anything you say.”
With that, Jack went to the car and retrieved a bag from the back seat. Back inside once more, he emptied the contents of the bag onto the kitchen table. A clipper, and electric razor was all that was inside. “From now on, I’m gonna make sure that no other man will have you. You will sit on my command and submit to have your head shaved at my whim. If you can’t live with that, then you can get out right this second.” As he said the words, he plugged in both haircutting tools and turned a chair towards her. Without a word she sat in the chair and closed her eyes.
As for Greg? Two weeks later he was caught by a considerably more jealous husband while he lay in bed with the mans wife. The man is now being held without bail for 1st degree murder.
The End.
